The professional-accountancy path

CA · CS · CMA Foundation

For a student drawn to finance, law or accounting, these three foundation exams are the first step onto a professional career path: Chartered Accountancy (CA, from ICAI), Company Secretary (CS, from ICSI), and Cost & Management Accountancy (CMA, from ICMAI). Beginning at the foundation stage, from school, is a real head start on a long qualification.

Who can appear

A student can register after Class 10 and appear for the foundation exam after passing Class 12 — from any stream, though a commerce background helps. Each institute (ICAI, ICSI, ICMAI) sets its own registration windows.

ℹ️

These are known for demanding foundation exams with modest pass rates — a large field sits each session, and only a minority clear at the first attempt. Early, structured preparation is exactly what separates those who pass from those who repeat.

Pass rates and candidate numbers vary by session and by institute — cite the specific ICAI / ICSI / ICMAI figure on the live page rather than a single fixed number.
