NDA
The NDA exam is the route for a school-leaver to become an officer in the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force. Conducted by the UPSC twice a year, it is one of the few prestigious national careers a student can begin straight after Class 12.
Who can appear
Unmarried candidates — both men and women — aged roughly 16.5 to 19.5, who have passed or are appearing in Class 12. The Army wing accepts any stream; the Air Force and Naval wings require Physics and Mathematics at Class 12. Selection runs in three stages: the written exam, the SSB interview, and a medical.

The national picture
Each cycle draws several lakh applicants for only a few hundred cadet vacancies across the three services — and the written exam is only the beginning, as the SSB interview screens out the large majority of those who clear it.
